DIY Ham Radio Mast

Image
Here's a great father and son project for the weekend--building a  "homebrew" ham radio mast. A nicely done and easy to follow video. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp86UNk8CG4 This is post 2862 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Here are some general comments from the author: Cheap? Yep. Easy to put up an antenna? Yep. Easy to take down an antenna? Yep. Easy DIY antenna mast? Ugh, no, but it was cheap! Hopefully this build will give you some inspiration on a potential antenna mast solution. ----- Thanks for joining us today. Aloha es 73 de Russ (KH6JRM).

I installed a HUGE 90m (300ft) wire loop on the ground for HF receiving

Image
If you want an extremely quiet receive antenna for the lower HF bands (160-80 meters), then this experimental design from Callum (M0MCX) may interest you.  I used similar designs at a home I owned in the rural Puna District of Hawaii Island and was surprised just how noise free the antenna worked on 80 meters. I even used a large receive loop on my property to tap into MW signals on the AM broadcast band with excellent results. Here are some comments from Callum: Amazing 90m loop with 4:1 balun. How does it compare to the smaller Loop On Ground? That video is here: https://youtu.be/7n29t-wjpG0 More tests to follow. See what you think. Callum. ----- Thanks for joining us today. Aloha es 73 de Russ (KH6JRM).

Make a 1/4 wavelength antenna + calculations

Image
Thanks to "The Current Source" youtube channel for this excellent presentation on how to design, build, test, and use a simple 1/4 wavelength antenna for the 70 cm Amateur Radio band. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haizSAYquUg This is post 2860 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Here are some general comments about the antenna: Today I’m going to show you how to make a 1/4 wavelength antenna for the 70cm amateur radio band. Of course physics doesn’t care who’s using her laws, so this design can be applied to really any frequency, though the lower in frequency you go, the bigger it gets! We’ll cover a little basic antenna theory, build it, install it in the attic and do some testing & tuning on a nanoVNA vector network analyzer. **NOTE: If you are going to make one of these, the distance from the center of the SO239 to the edge of the metal plate MUST be consider

Wire loop on the ground for HF receiving: How Good?

Image
Here's a great idea for reducing noise on the 80 and 40 meter Amateur Radio Bands. Australian radio amateur Peter Parker (VK3YE) uses a wire on the ground to reduce noise often found on the lower HF bands. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlIEx58jGhw This is post 2859 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Here are some comments from Peter: A wire loop on the ground as a receiving antenna? How well does it work? Here I give it a test. FRONT socket connected to wire loop, REAR socket connected to G5RV. Improvised Apartment Antenna 1

Image
Operating your VHF/UHF equipment in fringe reception areas can be quite a challenge.  In this video, Richard Bailey show us how he improvised a simple, effective antenna capable of extended range and coverage. You should be able to find most materials at the nearest hardware or home building supply outlet. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBDBVV-yb4g This is post 2857 in a continuing series of simple ham radio antennas. Here are some comments from Richard: After a lot of years living in houses I find myself in a one story apartment in a county with no repeaters. So as any good Ham would I improvised. Thanks for joining us today. Aloha es 73 de Russ (KH6JRM).
