Thanks to Julian (OH8STN) for this excellent guide to off grid ham radio operations.  The information will be of particular interest for those operating at ARRL Field Day sites (homebound, mostly because of COVID-19), portable locations, and at emergency facilities. This video would make an excellent presentation for your next radio club meeting or ham radio license class. Here are some general comments from Julian: "Hello Operators. Todays video is very special, since it answers many of the questions we've asked about portable ham radio off grid. Operating a ham radio station off grid and or in the field is not something to be taken lightly. We need to look at our field communication goals, how long we're going to be out there, the type of equipmen

Thanks to Australian radio amateur Alex (VK2PRC) for this step-by-step guide to making a 20 meter half wave end fed vertical antenna.  This antenna doesn't require much space and can be built for a modest cost. According to Alex, the antenna directs most of its energy toward the horizon at an angle of approximately 15-degrees--excellent for DX contacts. Here are some comments from Alex: "A complete step by step guide for, making and tuning a 20 Meter HWEF vertical antenna including impedance matching coupler. If you are unable to make one for yourself, email me and I'll make one for you. NOTE: 1mm enameled wire MUST be used, NO other size!!!!!!! Here's an ultra-simple ground plane antenna that will work from the CB frequencies (11m) and 10m thorugh 2m and 70 cm. Gil of "RadioPreppers.com" takes you step by step through the design, construction, and use of this basic antenna.  Here are some of Gil's comments: "Building and testing a quarter-wave ground plane jungle antenna. This is a simple antenna for CB, 10m and up. It is used hanging from a tree using three spreaders made of locally sourced material. It doesn't get much simpler than that! Thanks to Kevin Loughin (KB9RLW) for this update on his "630m-10m small footprint antenna experiment." This video is the second part of an experiment  to see if an antenna designed to cover 630m through 10m can be squeezed into a small urban lot.  Kevin says work continues, especially with the issue of RF noise in the MW frequencies.  Here are some of his comments: "I know a few are wondering what's happening with this antenna idea. If you live in deed-restricted housing (HOA/CC&Rs), you know how difficult it is to erect a decent antenna without the neighbors suspecting your radio activities. In this video, Patrick Dortch installs one of the best disguised HF antennas I've seen. Perhaps this installation will help you get the antenna you want without the "radio police" finding it. Here are some general observations from Pat: "How do I have up 2 dipoles, one that's 133' long, in an HOA? With secret underground tunnels, that's how!" ----- For the latest Amateur/Ham Radio news and information, please visit these websites: http://www.HawaiiARRL.info. http://www.arrl.org. http://www.hamradioupdate.com http://www.southgatearc.org. https://www.blubrry.com/
