How to Build and Rock The Magical Tape Measure Antenna

Here's another good reason to add a metal tape measure to your emergency "go-kit"-- it can be used to create a versatile, inexpensive HF vertical antenna. In this video, Simon (VA7BIX) shows how some basic tools, scrap lumber, a spare fiberglass fishing rod, and a bit of creativity can create a fully-functional HF antenna for both home station use and for "field" operations.  Don't forget that left over supply of PVC pipe in your garage.   If you are plagued by local noise (RFI) or HOA complaints, you may want to try "the antenna you put down, not put up" built by Australian radio Amateur Peter Parker (VK3YE). Peter's wire loop on the ground may be nearly invisible to your neighbors while it reduces some of the bad noise in your area. Although the antenna is primarily for HF reception, it could, in an emergency, be be used a NVIS (near vertical incident skywave) antenna.
