DIY 9:1 Unun End-Fed Random Wire Antenna for Ham Radio

Image
Thanks to "The Smokin Ape" for this in depth analysis of the theory and practical applications of end-fed random wire antennas. Of particular importance is the design, construction, and testing of a 9:1 Unun, which is an integral part of this antenna system. The End Fed Halfwave Antenna (EFHW) is one of the most popular antennas for both home station and field use. In this video from M.J. Jordan (KW3KW), we get a thorough introduction to the theory and practical applications of this versatile HF antenna. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S1f4nlYl-Q Here are some comments from KW3KW: If you could only select one HF Ham Radio Antenna, for both your base unit and go-bag, the End Fed Half Wave Antenna is your choice. I will explain what it is, how to set it up, different configurations, various manufacturing options. I will also go deeper into what is a NVIS Antenna and why you need it. It is a great option when using the EFHW Antenna. Make sure to check out all my videos on Ham Radio for Beginners. Key Links Resonate Vs Non-Resonate Antenna: https://palomar-engineers.com/non-res... 1600ft Homebrew wire antenna-QRP SSB 5w-Iowa.

Sometimes, radio amateurs get to build an HF antenna on "a field of dreams."  Such is the case with Kevin LaBehn (K0KLB), who built a large 1600ft (487.80m) long wire on an open space in the state of Iowa. Kevin discusses his project and records the outstanding performance of this extremely long antenna. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD3J7oP5_CU Here are some comments from Kevin (K0KLB): Hello all... This antenna is not too unusual, but I wanted to get it built before winter and it was a great outdoor learning adventure... I built it to experiment with a horizontal low long wire configuration. This wire antenna is 1600ft long and 10ft off the ground... I was curious about the performance difference between it and my normal 550ft long wire that is 70ft high.. The low wire in the field is just a temporary install and will be removed before the spring field work next year.. If you wan

Build a dirt cheap speaker wire vertical antenna for HF.

Image
You don't need a lot of money to make a simple, effective multiband HF vertical antenna. In this video from Walt (K4OGO),  we see how a few basic materials and some inexpensive speaker wire can be transformed into a 20 meter through 10 meter vertical antenna. Walt made this antenna for a trip to Europe.  His results were good considering the materials used for the project. Why not make this antenna for your "Go-Kit" or "Bug Out Bag?" If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDEUfPgx44M Here are some comments from Walt (K4OGO): Build an effective and inexpensive vertical antenna for any HF band. In this video I show you how to make speaker wire verticals to cover 20 through 10 meters. #hamradioantenna #hamradio #amateurradio Link to my drawing plan can be found on the Coastal Waves & Wires Facebook page. ----- Thanks for joining us today. Hamstick Antenna great for small back yards.

Here are some more HF antennas suitable for small back yards and other limited spaces, courtesy of David Casler (KE0OG). David explains the theory and operation of the popular MFJ HF mobile Ham-Tenna whips and the CHA Quad One antenna. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIQX8qrIJUo Here are some comments from David (KE0OG): I received from Chameleon Antenna their CHA-QUAD ONE to review. I also bought some MFJ HF Mobile Ham-Tenna Whips. The CHA Quad ONE acts as a hub into which you can put either two Ham-Tenna or other Ham Sticks to create a short dipole, or add a second set to create a two band dipole. Tiny Noodle Antenna for HF Limited Spaces

Image
Here's another great antenna idea from Rudi (K7RAW)...using a "pool noodle" as an HF antenna. The antenna is closely related to a spirally-wound vertical helix, such as a metal "slinky" toy.  The antenna works amazingly well for it small size--a perfect fit for apartment and condominium dwellers. Rudi does an excellent job of explaining both the theory and practical applications of this fascinating antenna. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tky7p_x2mA Here are some comments from Rudi (K7RAW): This is a BRAND NEW type of HF antenna for those with extremely limited space to setup a conventional antenna. It is derived from the Slinky Antenna but with a few upgrades. It is less than 1/5th the length of a normal dipole, yet performs similarly. No ground, radials, counterpoise, tuner or BalUn required. Just a coax feedline with a Mix 31 common-mode ferrite choke at the antenna e

The Easy and Cheap Ham Radio Apartment Antenna.

If you need a simple, inexpensive indoor 2 meter antenna, then this project from Max Carlisle (KN6VNE) is for you. This VHF antenna is perfect for apartments, condominiums, and other deed-restricted properties. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQDCExOL5m8 Here are a few comments from Max (KN6VNE): In my previous Ham Radio video, talking about my 1st Ham Radio rig and becoming a new Ham in 2022, I didn't talk enough about the antenna I was using. This video is to answer those antenna questions and show my simply solution to a VHF Ham Radio antenna in my apartment.
