Helical Antenna

Another way to get on the 160 meter Amateur Radio Band without using much space is to make a helically wound vertical antenna.  All you have to do is wind a 1/2 wavelength helix on a 33-foot (10.82 meters) fiberglass mast, add some loss loss coaxial cable for a feedline, and establish a good counterpoise or ground radial system. In this video from "Engineering Subjects the Easy Way", we get a complete tutorial on the design, construction, testing, and use of this easily-made vertical antenna. I've used vertical helix antennas for many years when I lived on small urban lots.  Despite a restricted bandwidth, vertical helix antennas work well, provided you have a decent ground radial system beneath the antenna.
