Surprising! Ham Radio Vertical Antennas-Are Longer.

A fascinating study of "LONG" Vertical Antennas from Callum (M0MCX).  Callum discusses the pros and cons of long vertical antennas from 1/4 wavelength to 1 3/4 wavelength, including the popular 5/8 wavelength. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2GKNQb0OPA. Here are some comments from Callum (M0MCX): This is quite interesting. Let's compare small quarter waves right up to 1-3/4 wave antennas including the famous 5/8. Why are large verticals sometimes not as good. And why they are sometimes better? You might like this. Callum. Vertical Antennas--A complete guide.

Thanks to Peter Waters (G3OJV) for this in-depth guide to the theory and practical applications of Amateur Radio Vertical Antennas.  Peter does an excellent job of explaining how vertical antennas work and how they can be used for both home and portable use. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uza3e8E_2uQ. Here are some comments from Peter (G3OJV): I found one of the best text Guides I have ever seen covering the topic of vertical antennas. Whilst it is aimed at 160 metres, much of it is applicable to all the HF bands. Let me take you to the link so that you can benefit from the excellent information provided. Cheap and easy to build tilt over antenna mast.

Image
If you live in areas plagued by storms and high winds, you may find this tilt over antenna mast from "Maverick RC" a useful addition to your antenna system. This tilt over mast project will take some time to design and build, but it will pay for itself by saving your beam antennas from being ruined by sudden weather changes.  As a benefit, you'll be able to do basic antenna maintenance safely and in less time than before. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xsKEURJFCE. Here are some comments from "Maverick RC": Here's a breakdown of the home made tilt over antenna mast that I built for my radio. The initial post is a 4x4x16 that is around 4-1/12 feet in the ground. I added roughly 9 feet on top of it to give it a total height of 20 feet. The actual metal pipe is 33 feet in length. There are multiple pieces used and the joints are staggered, being one section inside of

Simple $3.00 Ham Radio Antenna-2M Moxon

Image
If you want an inexpensive, easy to make antenna for the 2 Meter Amateur Radio Band, then this simple moxon antenna design from Sean Klechak ("Ham Radio Dude"--W9FFF) is for you. Sean does an excellent job of fabricating this antenna from two metal camping chairs picked up at a discount store.  His advice on how to tune this experimental antenna is spot on! This 2M Moxon antenna is perfect for portable or emergency use. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browsers search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpb4dM41_8Q. Here are some comments from Sean (W9FFF): I had the opportunity to find some old Camping stools from SAVERS, a local thrift store, so I destroyed them and made a Moxon antenna! I have heard the stories of a Lawn chair dipole and Yagi - (Check out     • The Lawn Chair Di...   for Ham Radio Crash Course's Lawn Chair Dipole) or https://qsysociety.org/2009/01/04/6-m... for a 6 meter lawn chair moxon (This idea is nothing

Painter's Pole Dipole

Image
Most of the materials for this "Painter's Pole Dipole Antenna" can be found at the nearest building supply outlet (such as Home Depot).  A portable collapsible mast is the main ingredient to this portable antenna support which can be used for both at home and in "the field" operations. Kevin (AD0IN) does a good job of showing how to deploy this antenna support system.  This antenna is patterned after a design by Herb (NZ0F). If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQP-HUvX8wk. Here are some comments from Kevin (AD0IN): This is my 20m Dipole mounted on a twelve-foot painters pole, inspired by Herb, NZ0F. How to build a 4:1 balun start to finish with Mike and Callum.

Image
I've always disliked building baluns because of the often tedious details one needs to follow to finish the project correctly. Ever since I watched this excellent, often entertaining video from Mike (M0MSN) and Callum (M0MCX), my mind has changed and I now want to tackle this project again.  The explanation and demonstration of building a 4:1 balun are both basic and easy-to-understand. So, take careful notes and get ready to build one of the most useful antenna accessories you can add to your ham radio station. If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZf-dwWIUDo. Here are some comments from Callum (M0MCX): Mike and I built a 4:1 balun from scratch. Tag along, enjoy the banter and maybe even learn something!
