This interesting antenna design comes from our radio amateur friends in Australia, where the popular telescoping fishing rods known as squid poles have found a variety of radio applications.  The Squid Pole is a cheap, collapsible, self-contained portable antenna that can be configured for the 80, 40, 30, and 15 meter amateur radio bands using a spirally-wound wire, appropriated loading coils, an ATU, and a rudimentary ground radial system.

The article is divided into several closely related parts:

General description of the squid pole antenna.
Construction details and loading coil fabrication.
Parts required.
Connecting antenna to the ATU.
Ground radial considerations.

If you can't obtain an Australian Squid Pole, you can buy a telescoping fiberglass mast from a variety of manufacturers, including MFJ.  I've built several vertical helix antennas over the years, and have found them useful in portable or on Field Day operations.
